South Yorkshire Police will lose its helicopter. The Government is insisting the force joins a national police air scheme, despite having previously opted out of the service.

South Yorkshire Police are being forced to join a national police air scheme.

This means losing its helicopter.

The force had opted out of the national scheme - claiming response times will triple.

But the Government have stepped in, saying all police forces will have to share helicopters, to become more efficient.

Three new helicopters will be based in West Yorkshire, Humberside and North Derbyshire.

In total, there are 20 bases across the country.
