Improvements needed at South Yorkshire's police custody suites

Inspectors say immediate action needs to be taken by South Yorkshire Police when it comes to dealing with children in custody.

Around 100 cells were examined across the county between June 2018 and May this year - and it was found that the force was not "consistently" meeting the requirements of inspectors.

One youth was held for eight hours without review.

The report also said there were a lack of leadership, which meant day-to-day operations were not managed effectively.

It added that the condition of Doncaster's custody suite was old and in a state of disrepair, but did note that conditions at Barnsley's stations were generally good.

In a statement South Yorkshire police say safety is paramount, and they've invested significantly in Neighbourhood Policing Teams over the last 3 years.
